At the age of 10 he was accepted into one of the most renowned schools of ballet, The Ballet Academy of the Bolschoi Theater. After 8 years of comprehensive studies in the Arts, he graduated with honors in 1985. In 1991 , during his visit to Moscow, offered Sergei Vanaev a contract as a principal dancer in the company of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, in Düsseldorf, Germany. He debued as Prince Siegfried in Heinz Spoerli’s opening season ballet of “Swan Lake”. 5 years of diverse main roles in the works of Heinz Spoerli and other world famous choreographers followed. Sergei also danced Oberon in Heinz Spoerli’s ballet film “A Midsummer Night’s Dream”. During the season of 1996-1997 he was a soloist under the direction of Valeri Panov in the city of Bonn. Parallel to his dancing, he partially overtook the responsibility of training the company dancers. Since the theater season 2004/2005 Sergei Vanaev has been artistic director of the ballet company of the Stadttheater Bremerhaven. In 2007 he was honored with the “Maya Plisetskaya Award” from the “International Maya Plisetskaya and Rodion Shchedrin Foundation” In the same year Sergei Vanaev was contracted by Moscow Classical Ballet directed by Natalia Kasatkina and Vladimir Vasiliov. He excelled in a short time to the rank of a soloist dancer. During a period of 6 years his repertoire consisted of numerous principal and soloist roles in classical and contemporary works. The company toured several countries, and he danced main roles in the ballet films: “Don Quixote”, “Hamlet”, and “The Rite of Spring”. Sergei Vanaev’s main strength and dominating quality is his capability to choreograph energetic, full length, story ballets with innovative interpretations from world literature. The enthusiastic and high performance quality of his dancers enables him to effectively express his dynamic and riveting choreographic language to the limits of physical and experimental development. His work outside the Theater of Bremerhaven, as choreographer, workshop organizer, and professional trainer, mainly in the U.S.A and Japan., also facilitates the development of his creative potential and opens the path for exploring new challenging directions in artistic expression.
